The testing point is likely to come when Bibi has to decide whether to pull the trigger on Iran or Syria. Obama wants him to ask permission first – - and impliedly, permission won’t be given. I’m betting he won’t ask, which will put Obama in a difficult spot.

Obama is no fool. He is a shrewd politician knowing that he needs the Jewish vote. So he gives lip service to the idea of a Jewish nation while planning its demise. Bibi has seen through the ruse and is walking a tight rope. He wants American aid, not Obama’s views.

On the one hand, ideally the two-state solution is the best option for all concerned. I stress “ideally” because there is a countervailing reality: the (non-Jordanian) Palestinians have developed and inculcated a thoroughly dysfunctional culture. In the circumstances, the kind of two-state solution which the Palestinians want is akin to settling your differences with a stalker by letting him live in your guest room. The Jordanians realize that the Palestinians are dysfunctional, so they don’t want responsibility for them, either. So what is on the face of it a simple solution is actually a conundrum. Perhaps it is wishful thinking on my part, but I believe you are right in concluding that “President Obama will not be able to charm Netanyahu or the Israelis into making a deal that would effectively destroy their nation.”
