Sarah Palin has given dozens of great interviews since coming onto the national scene in a big way last summer. Yet somehow, Katie Couric managed to record the most horrible interview with her of all interviewers so far. Nevertheless, Couric won a Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism from the USC’s Annenberg School, for her 2 missed-the-mark interviews with Palin. Just the name of the award sounds snooty.
It was possibly the worst interview of Palin ever conducted, and did the worst job of breaking through to find out what Palin is all about. That’s good journalism? Every single time Palin speaks with clarity about her positions on energy, her experience as Governor, her positions on Obama’s Debt Now! plan, faulty stimulus plan etc., it’s another bit of proof of how terrible Couric’s interview was. This interview with Sean Hannity, June 8 is just more proof. How can you even utter Couric’s name in the same sentence with Walter Cronkite, let alone give her the “Cronkite Award?”
Yes, apparently Couric caught Palin off guard and created a stumble. Woo hoo, good for you. Meanwhile, the media has rolled out the green carpet for Obama all the way, even referring to him as being like a God. That’s journalism in America.
From mary551 at TVNEWSER: This award recognizes … the ability to trip up a candidate, to discredit her by a weakness that is important to a small sector of the population, to make a state Governor ridiculous by quizzing her on points irrelevant to the work she has done up to the election season, to show off, to use the advantage of acquired knowledge to injure, …. Although it saved a floundering news anchor, in the whole spectrum of what most benefits journalism and the society, these interviews didn’t do anyone any good, and they aren’t really evidence of enduring value or skill.

She’s going to have to come out swinging if she wants to vindicate herself. She’s going to have to meet the enemy interviewers head on. Hannity is easy, George Stephi, The View, John Stewart… That’s how she gets her good reputation back.
Katie Couric is not a journalist, IMHO. CBS should fire her and Letterman, both.
