A lot of people, particularly black folk, discuss President Obama’s “change/redistribution” policies in the abstract, since most don’t actually know anybody affected by them. They watch the mainstream media and absorb their liberal slant on the “news.”
But some of us watch FOX (Fair and Balanced) for our news and/or are actually touched by these sometimes absurd policies, drafted by young, inexperienced political appointees, a fact that ought to worry everybody.
The President’s auto task force doesn’t include anyone with auto or even business experience, including the 31 year-old “whiz kid” Brian Deese in charge of dismantling GM (now called Government Motors instead of General Motors). To add insult to injury, the group is being accused of playing politics and targeting Republican-owned dealerships for closure.
One such dealership is owned by the family of a dear friend of mine. Juan Carlos “J.C.” Planas, is a Republican, District 115, State of Florida House of Representatives, and is also General Counsel for the family business, Tamiami Chrysler Jeep, scheduled for closing in a few days.
I met J.C. when he worked for former Miami Dade County Mayor, Alex Penelas, as he sat on the County Commission. J.C. was born in Miami and after graduating from Florida State in 1993, he graduated from St. Thomas Law School in 1998. He then worked as a prosecutor with the State Attorney’s office after which he became Tamiami’s General Counsel. He then ran for Florida State Representative in 2002 and was reelected in 2006 without opposition. His law firm, Kurkin Brandes, also represents over 80 GM dealerships, many of which are closing under Obama’s plan.
J.C.’s family realized the American Dream. They came to Miami in 1961 from Cuba where J.C.’s grandfather owned an electronics (Hitachi) distributorship that he brought here. His father, Carlos Planas, owner of Tamiami, graduated from Miami Edison High and the University of Miami. He worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit and then became a broker at Merrill Lynch.
According to J.C., his father brokered a deal with a Venezuelan man and in 1989 they bought bankrupt Contemporary Chrysler and Imports. They changed the name to Tamiami Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge and built it up to become one of the top sellers of Chrysler in the Southeastern Region of the U.S. It is the only Hispanic dealership in the area and #70 out of 3,000.
His brother and general manager, Alex Planas, told CBS4’s Gary Nelson, “As a child of Cuban immigrants, now I understand what it’s like, you know, when my parents would tell me stories of what it’s like for someone to take away your business.”
Who would have thought that the President of the U.S. (POTUS) would do the same thing that the President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, would do.
What makes the closing of Tamiami so suspect is that it does not meet any of the three criteria set by Chrysler for closing dealerships: they must sell more used cars than new; they must sell other lines; and must have other Chrysler dealerships not scheduled for closing.
So the closing of Tamiami represented a complete taking of the business. The Chrysler franchise is 75 – 85% of their business, it is their only business and 100 employees will lose their jobs.
Ken Timmerman of Newsmax.com wrote in Republican Donors Hit by Chrysler Closings, “An attorney representing some of the dealers, Leonard Bellavia,”… stated “It became clear to us that Chrysler does not see the wisdom of terminating 25 percent of its dealers…It really wasn’t Chrysler’s decision. They are under enormous pressure from the President’s automotive task force.”
So in essence, our government is making Chrysler shut Tamiami down. The South Florida Congressional delegation has come out in force in a bi-partisan way (Bill Nelson (D), Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart (R), etc.) to complain about the Task Force’s decision to include Tamiami in the closing of 789 (25%) Chrysler and 1,100 (20%) GM dealerships, costing 100,000 jobs.
I discussed this with one of my black Democrat friends and he laughed. Yes laughed. Then commented that it was payback for his mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. What?
Black Democrats love Obama’s redistribution plans. Problem is- if it’s payback they’re looking for, then it’s directed toward the wrong people. Republicans didn’t create U.S. slavery nor Jim Crow laws – Democrats did. And Cubans had nothing to do with either system.
Obama is taking the lives away from hard-working people who have built their businesses from the ground up. Oh yes, and for my Democratic friends, according to the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers, he’s doing it to 140 of Chrysler’s 170 –and 174 of GM’s 300 black and minority-owned franchises.
That’s not Robin Hood – that’s robbery, a felony punishable by jail time. So while the Democratic-controlled Congress is trying to punish the Bush administration for “high crimes”, they need to look at the Obama administration too.
Contrary to George Bush, Obama’s high crimes are on his own people. Or are we?

Good article. Welcome to the third world. Anyone who has lived in Latin America immediately recognizes this political cronyism for what it is.
The only upside is that none of this will succeed. By grabbing short-term political gain they are sowing their own seeds of long-term destruction. Same goes for the press fawning over President Obama. People get sloppy and arrogant when unchallenged. The Democrats will go too far, they always do…
