According to Time, following the passing of Walter Cronkite, America’s choice for “most trusted newscaster” is . . . Jon Stewart? Really?
Perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it is discouraging to learn that a plurality of my fellow citizens prefer a jackanapes who treats news events with disingenuous mockery to . . . uh . . . well, Brian Williams isn’t so bad. Sometimes.
Of course, this was a straw poll, and the choices were very limited. Of the 9409 votes cast, Stewart polled 44%; Brian Williams placed second with 29%; Charlie Gibson got 19%; and Katie Couric ran a stunningly distant dead last with 7%. Now, the Couric result I can believe.
Could it be that Time has some conservative followers who voted for Stewart on the ground that he at least is honest about being a clown? Or do TimeLibs really think that what Stewart presents is “news”?
Not to be outdone, Politico sponsored its own straw poll following a story on the Time results. To be sporting, Politico opened up the field to include CNN, FOX News, and others. The result? Stewart still wins, and Couric is still dead-dog last. Couric is running well behind Joe The Plumber, and is losing to such nincompoops as Keith Olbermann, Stephen Colbert, and Rachel Maddow.
Here are the Politico straw poll results as of this writing:
Jon Stewart 29%
Bill O’Reilly 20%
Brian Williams 11%
Glenn Beck 8%
Charlie Gibson 8%
Anderson Cooper 5%
Mike Huckabee 5%
Keith Olbermann 3%
Stephen Colbert 3%
Rachel Maddow 3%
Joe the Plumber 3%
Katie Couric 2%
And that’s the way it is, June 25, 2009.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid a frightening number of Americans believe John Stewart is a legitimate news source.
This country seems to be fine with electing comedians so why not get reality from one as well. We are turning into a country of simpletons. Most folks don’t care about politics let alone have the ability to even identify their states own reps.
Maybe that’s the answer, the next Republican candidate for president needs to be a jackass comedian!
Maybe we can create a reality show, “Who wants to be president” and people can call in and vote people off of the show… who ever wins will be funded to run as an independent.
We’re getting dumber by the day…
Welcome to the United States of Hollywood!
@James Shott – Even more unfortunately, Stewart is as legitimate a news source as most of the “newscasters” working at NBC and MSNBC. Perhaps that is a source of confusion . . . .
