Virginia Polls Confirm Big Lead For Conservatives

a_Nast~Republican~elephantNo sooner was the ink dry on this morning’s article, In Virginia Dems Dis Deeds As Republicans Roll, than there were two new polls confirming double-digit leads for the Republican statewide slate.  Survey USA has McDonnell up by 17 points in Governor’s race, with Bolling (Lt. Gov.) up by 14 and Cucinelli (A.G.) by 16.  Public Policy Polling, a Democratic Party affiliated poll, has McDonnell by 15, Bolling by 12, and Cucinellu by 16.  The stage has been set for a conservative landslide in the statewide races.

Sure, there’s a week to go, and anything could happen. But at this point the Republicans are leading comfortably in almost every demographic, including young voters and women, and Democrats are clearly discouraged.

The trend lines are unmistakable, no  matter who does the analysis.  See the current charts from Pollster-dot-Com, Vote for America, and Frontloading HQ.  The Public Policy Polling release makes no attempt at spin — it is headlined “McDonnell Expands Lead Again.”

The question now arises, what impact will the statewide races have on local elections for the Virginia General Assembly? Unfortunately, because there are so many “safe” districts, many races are uncontested (the state Republican leaders need to be kicking themselves for that).  In my district, challenger Will Morefield has been making a strong run against the Democratic House of Delegates incumbent; if Democratic Party voters stay home, this seat could change hands.
